NSW Sliders take Gold at the 2007 Pacific Rim International

20-SEP-2007

The NSW Sliders have won the first ever Pacific Rim International Tournament defeating arch rivals the ACT Flames by 3 goals to 0. The Flames had the early advantage when Nathan Lawler was sent for a charging foul. NSW killed the penalty and began to mount their own pressure. Six minutes into the contest Saxon Hooper got the ball from Italian super star Marvin Dossi, and with a nice turn drilled home the opening goal. NSW mounted more pressure soon after when ACT centre Trevor Banks went to the bin for tripping. NSW unable to convert on the power play. 1-0 at half time. NSW grabbed the safety goal just 6 minutes into the 2nd half. Peter Yabsley and Dane Hansen combining to set up Marvin Dossi to finish. 2-0 NSW with one hand on the trophy. Time wound on and with only a minute thirty in the game the pressure told on ACT and Ash Grimmer was called for a holding foul putting NSW on the power play. With so little time to go and a player down ACt had no choice but to pull their goal keeper. From a deep face off win, Sam Boer cleared the ball the length of the ice, curving it perfectly into the open net. 3-0 NSW and game over.

Ottawa Icemen Defeat QLD Cyclones to take Bronze

20-SEP-2007

The Ottawa Icemen had won their last 4 games in a row to make it into the bronze medal play off vs the QLD Cyclones. QLD lost the semi final to ACT 2-1 and were hoping a win over the Icemen would give them the bronze. Things started well for QLD with Ottawa Icemen Deni Forgues taking a roughing penalty, just 3 minutes into the game. The cyclones were unable to convert and the score remained 0-0 at half time. Again the Icemen put themselves under pressure with Chris Vani going for a High Broom on ball call. Again QLD failed to convert. Then the heart breaker for QLD as Don Goldmaire put away a range shot with less than 2 minutes on the clock. However the game was not done with yet as Jon Cureston was called for interference with only 30 seconds to go. QLD with an empty net had a two player advantage but could not capitalise as time ran out. 1-0 Bronze medal winning performance from the Ottawa Icemen over the QLD Cyclones.

Australia Get Over the Visiting Canadians

04-SEP-2007

The Pacific Rim International kicked off in fine style with awesome test match between the Aussie Dingoes and the visting Canadian team out of Ottawa. The game played in front of 200 or so spectators saw the Dingoes win in style by 4 goals to 1. The Aussies were on the board first with a goal to Tony Pike (ACT) assited by Trevor Banks(ACT) and Davin Harvey(NSW). The Canaidians deflated the crowd replying just minutes later with a goal to Lucien Proulx on the break away. Just before half tiem the Dingoes grabbed the lead back with a long ranger to Adam Auteri (QLD). Half time 2-1 Dingoes.. the crowd happy and buzzing. The Aussies continued to dominate the second half getting better and better as they got used to each other. The 3-1 lead came early in the half with Saxon Hooper (NSW) passing to Dane Hansen (NSW) who got it to the net where Rohan Golding (QLD) tapped it in. With only 3 minutes to go the Aussies sealed it, Hooper finding ROb Luco (QLD) who belted towards goal for a waiting Harvey to touch in. A great result for the Dingoes, 4-1.

First team officially signed up!

21-MAR-2007

The Ottawa Icemen from Canada are the first team to officially sign up for the Pacific Rim International Broomball Tournament.

Below is a quote taken from a post on the Broomball Australia Forums:

Just a quick post to say that we are coming to the tourney. We've got some plane tickets bought, some hotel rooms booked and anywhere from 9-20 people coming for a visit. Our team is a hybrid of 4 men's teams from the Ottawa area, including some lads from the 1998 - 2004 versions of the Ottawa Nationals. Many of us went to the worlds in Bolzano Italy, Victoria, Minneapolis and Corner Brook.

Our season is winding down here in Ottawa Canada. I play in 3 weekly leagues and we are in the playoffs in two of them.

Here's the website for the Russell ON league:
Russell Broomball League
and the one for the Ottawa league:
Ottawa Men's Broomball League

We're looking forward to seeing your sights, driving on the left and drinking some Fosters (but not all at the same time.) We will be looking for tips on places to see and people to meet.

Bring it on.

"Dentman" Dave Watchorn
North Gower ON Canada

The Pacific Rim organisers welcome Dave and his team and hope they enjoy both their visit and broomball while in Australia.
